Quantification of Regional Intrapulmonary Oxygen Partial Pressure Evolution during Apnea by 3He MRI

We present a new method to determine in vivo the temporal evolution of intrapulmonary oxygen concentrations by functional lung imaging with hyperpolarized (3)Helium ((3)He-->). Single-breath, single-bolus visualization of (3)He--> administered to the airspaces is used to analyze nuclear spin relaxation caused by the local oxygen partial pressure p(O(2))(t). We model the dynamics of hyperpolarization in the lung by rate equations. Based hereupon, a double acquisition technique is presented to separate depolarization by RF pulses and oxygen induced relaxation. Relationships between oxygen concentration and patterns of energy metabolism in the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis

Abstract 1. 1. Activities of 10 enzymes and accumulation of two metabolites under experimental hypoxia were investigated in the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis . 2. 2. Pyruvate kinase (PK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malic enzyme (ME), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and fumarase (FUM) activities showed great increase at low oxygen levels. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity was not detected. 3. 3. An improved cathode for alkaline fuel cells

Abstract The use of nickel foam as an electrode substrate in alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) has been investigated for bipolar cells incorporating an electrically conducting gas diffusion layer (GDL). Improved performance, compared to a previous design, was obtained by adding an extra active layer (AL) composed of manganese (IV) oxide (MnO2) deposited onto carbon black. This new cathode design performed significantly better (130 mA cm−2 at 0.8 V and 25 °C) than the previous design (35 mA cm−2 under the same condition), especially at higher potential. Biological response of multicellular emt6 spheroids to exogenous lactate

The influence of elevated lactate concentrations, as found in tumor microregions, on cellular growth, viability, and metabolic state was studied employing the multicellular spheroid model. Spheroids of EMT6/Ro cells were cultured at 37 degrees C in 5% or 20% (v/v) oxygen, using stirred media with various concentrations of exogenous lactate ranging from 0.0 mM (standard conditions) to 20.0 mM. Elevated concentrations of exogenous lactate led to a considerable decrease of the maximum spheroid diameter at growth saturation, e.g., for 20% O2 from around 1700 microns to 700 microns in 0.0 and 20.0 mM lactate respectively. Assessment of a single-acquisition imaging sequence for oxygen-sensitive (3)He-MRI.

MRI of the lungs using hyperpolarized helium-3 (3He) allows the determination of intrapulmonary oxygen partial pressures (pO2). The need to separate competing processes of signal loss has hitherto required two different imaging series during two different breathing maneuvers. In this work, a new imaging strategy to measure pO2 by a single series of consecutive scans is presented. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated in three healthy human volunteers. Maps and histograms of intrapulmonary pO2 are calculated. Changes in the oxygen concentration of the inhaled gas mixture are well reproduced in the histograms. Influence of mechanoactivation on the adhesion and mechanical properties of metal/oxide interfaces

Properties of interfaces in solid state metal/oxide joints (Al/SiO2, Al/MgO, Al/glass, Mg/MgO, In/glass, Mg/SiO2 etc.) are reported. Interfaces were formed at plastic deformation of metal on the oxide surface at room temperature. Structure, composition, and micromechanical properties of the interfaces are studied by AFM, X-ray diffraction, SIMS, electron, optical microscopy, and precision microindentation. A noticeable adhesion is observed in the regions of maximum shear strain in case of metals with low oxide formation energy.
